Homemade Apple Butter

If you like apple butter, you will love this recipe.  You will need your slower cooker but believe me it will be worth the wait.

Ingredients
  • 5 1/2 pounds golden delicious apples  peel the skin off and core each apple.  You will finely chop the apples.  You can also use a food processor and set it to very fine.
  • 4 cups white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions
  1. Place the chapped apples into the slow cooker.  Mix the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt together in a separate bowl. Pour over the apples in the slow cooker and mix well.
  2. Cover and cook on high 1 hour.
  3. You will reduce the heat to low and cook 9 to 11 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thickened and dark brown.
  4. Uncover and continue cooking on low for an additional hour. Use a whisk to stir and to make the texture smoother, if desired.  Use a blender to get the consistency you want if you do not have a whisk.
  5. Spoon the mixture into a glass jar, cover and refrigerate.  You can also freeze apple butter but make sure you use a plastic container with a lid.
